  • Undertake the commercial management of major contracts for a 3.5 million business and grow the turnover and profitability through their energy, intelligence and enthusiasm. We undertake major metalwork contracts in the construction industry for blue-chip clients in a competitive and often pressurised industry, and we need an entrepreneurial and hard-working individual with a good understanding of engineering principles, high intelligence and an ability to learn rapidly all of the commercial elements required. This is a long-term position for somebody who wants to develop their career locally and progress financially by driving forward the fortunes of the organisation they are working for.
    Engineering knowledge or a highly practical personality is essential as well as a keen commercial brain and strong general numeric and ability to use Excel. This person will be taking on a leadership role fairly rapidly and will be negotiating and discussing contract matters early on with senior clients and will therefore need to be ambitious and self assured. This role will suit someone with a long term view on their career with us as the rewards will come through learning the skills of the trade and applying that to generate high rewards both for themselves and the business. They will be a determined and capable character looking for an opportunity to use their talents to succeed.  We are happy to take a less experienced or younger person provided they can prove their maturity and ability to succeed.
    Company information
    We have been trading as a successful specialist subcontractor for over eighty years. The company employs about 30 people and carries out contracts of between 100,000 and 3 million in the construction industry. We manufacture and design and install all our work from our factory. The person concerned will be reporting to the Managing Director and work in close partnership with him and the other non-executive Directors.

  • Your roles,  working in close liaison with the MD,  Production Manager and Drawing Office,  with whom some of these responsibilities will be shared.
  • Controlling the programming of all current contracts,  preparing the appropriate programs and communicating to all the relevant parties.
    Preparing, checking, controlling the issue of valuations every month and dealing with the valuations from the clients.
    Maintaining all the correspondence about extras and variations on contracts and negotiating these costs with the clients.
    Understanding and controlling the contractual position we are in with our customers so as to maximise the amount we can invoice on our success rate at closing out final accounts.
    Controlling all the fixing datasheets and shop floor time records and comparing them to the actual times taken on contracts and carry out the appropriate correspondence and reporting  and generating all the appropriate variation letters go with this.
    Monitoring and controlling difficult buying exercises to ensure that costs come within the budgets that the tenders have allowed for.
    Learning how to manage and control our overall workload spread across a year,  anticipating all the required resources to fulfil our obligations.
    Guiding and advising the estimating department on which jobs to secure in order to keep your work load full for the factory and fixers.
    Contributing to the technical discussions about the design and prototyping to ensure that we successfully install all projects.
    Assisting a contributing to the methods for installation - e.g. Crane hire,  coordination of subcontractors, liaison with main contractors-To ensure that we install within our budgets.
    Any other general duties relating to the company's operation that the MD deems appropriate to your abilities and role, required for the execution of the business.
